What is a transfer switch used for?

A transfer switch changes the connected electrical load between two power sources, such as utility power and a backup generator. It helps prevent the two sources from supplying the circuit simultaneously.

An automatic transfer switch monitors the power supply and changes sources automatically when required. A manual transfer switch requires an operator to move the switching mechanism.

The rated current should match the circuit load and electrical system design. Consider the continuous load, starting current and protective device coordination before selecting a 40A, 63A or 100A transfer switch.

A 2-pole model is commonly used in single-phase systems. A 4-pole transfer switch may be required in three-phase systems when the neutral conductor must also be switched. Final selection should follow the local wiring system and project requirements.
