What Is an Electrical Distribution Box?

An electrical distribution box receives incoming electrical power and distributes it safely to multiple branch circuits. It normally houses protective and switching devices such as miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, surge protection devices and isolators.

Each outgoing circuit is protected independently. If an overload, short circuit or leakage fault occurs, the corresponding protective device disconnects the affected circuit and helps reduce the risk of cable damage, equipment failure and electrical hazards.

Distribution boxes are widely used in homes, offices, commercial buildings, workshops, industrial equipment and renewable energy systems.

From Supply to Load

How Does an Electrical Distribution Box Work?

Power enters through the main supply, passes through switching and protective devices, and is divided into separate circuits for connected loads.

Outgoing Circuits

Fault response: If an overload, short circuit or leakage fault occurs, the relevant protective device disconnects the affected circuit. Other independent circuits can normally continue operating, depending on the configuration and fault location.
