What is a Circuit Breaker?

A circuit breaker is an electrical protection device that automatically disconnects a circuit when an overload, short circuit, leakage fault, or abnormal current condition occurs. Its main function is to protect cables, electrical equipment, distribution panels, and connected loads from damage caused by excessive current.

Unlike a fuse, which needs to be replaced after operation, a circuit breaker can usually be reset after the fault is removed. This makes it a practical protection device for residential, commercial, industrial, solar PV, and DC power systems.

Circuit breakers are selected according to the system type, rated voltage, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, protection function, and installation environment. For example, AC systems usually use AC MCBs or AC MCCBs, while solar PV and battery systems require DC-rated circuit breakers with proper arc extinguishing capability.

How Does a Circuit Breaker Work?

A circuit breaker monitors the current flowing through a circuit. When the current exceeds the rated value or when a fault occurs, the internal trip mechanism opens the contacts and disconnects the circuit.

For AC circuits, the current naturally crosses zero during each cycle, which helps extinguish the arc. For DC circuits, there is no natural zero-crossing point, so DC circuit breakers require a dedicated arc extinguishing structure. This is why DC MCBs and DC MCCBs should be used for solar PV systems, battery systems, and DC power distribution.

AC Circuit Breaker vs DC Circuit Breaker: Key Differences

AC and DC circuit breakers are designed for different electrical systems. They should not be used interchangeably unless the product is clearly rated for both AC and DC applications.

What is the difference between MCB and MCCB?

MCB is generally used for lower-current circuits and compact distribution boards. MCCB is used for higher-current applications and systems that require higher breaking capacity.

RCCB provides residual current protection, while RCBO combines residual current protection with overload and short-circuit protection.

AC circuit breakers should not be used in DC systems unless the product is clearly rated for DC applications. DC circuits require breakers designed for DC arc extinguishing.

Solar PV systems commonly use DC MCBs or DC MCCBs on the DC side and AC circuit breakers on the AC side after the inverter.
