What Is a Surge Protection Device?

A surge protection device, or SPD, limits transient overvoltage and diverts surge current away from sensitive electrical equipment.

During normal operation, the SPD remains in a high-impedance state. When a surge exceeds its operating threshold, the device rapidly conducts the surge current to the protective earthing system. After the transient event, it returns to its normal state.

An SPD does not replace a circuit breaker, fuse, grounding system or external lightning protection system. Effective protection requires correct device selection, coordinated backup protection, short connecting conductors and reliable grounding.

How Does a Surge Protection Device Work?

This fast response and self-recovery behavior make SPDs an essential element in all modern electrical installations, especially in solar PV systems, industrial control panels, and communication networks.

When the voltage exceeds its designed threshold, the SPD rapidly provides a low-resistance path and redirects the excess surge current away from sensitive equipment to the grounding system. This reduces the voltage to a safer level. After the surge ends, the SPD returns to standby and continues monitoring the circuit.

SPDs commonly use metal oxide varistors (MOVs), gas discharge tubes (GDTs), or combined protection components. Because these components gradually deteriorate after repeated surges, the SPD status indicator should be checked regularly and the protection module replaced when necessary.

Which Surge Protection Device Do You Need?

Choosing the right surge protection device depends on the installation position, electrical system and expected surge level. Use the guide below to identify the appropriate SPD for power distribution, photovoltaic or signal protection.

Main Incoming Distribution Board

Recommended: Type 1 or Type 1+2 SPD

Installed at the main incoming panel, these surge protection devices discharge high-energy lightning currents and protect the electrical system at the building entrance.

Typical applications: Industrial facilities, commercial buildings and installations with external lightning protection.

Sub-Distribution and Final Circuits

Recommended: Type 2 SPD

A Type 2 surge protection device protects downstream electrical equipment against induced lightning surges and switching overvoltages.

Typical applications: Distribution boards, control panels, industrial machinery and residential electrical systems.

Solar PV and DC Systems

Recommended: DC Surge Protection Device

A DC SPD protects photovoltaic strings, inverters, battery storage equipment and other DC circuits from transient overvoltages.

Typical applications: Solar combiner boxes, PV inverters, energy storage systems and DC distribution panels.

Communication and Control Lines

Recommended: Signal Surge Protector

Signal surge protectors limit transient overvoltages entering through communication, monitoring and control cables.

Typical applications: Ethernet networks, CCTV systems, RS485 lines, sensors and industrial automation equipment.
